this type of can opener is not made to "pierce" the top of the lid. it un-crimps the seal of the can, making it easy to lift off, but without the sharp edges to cut you. It takes a bit of getting used to (I have a manual one like this), but it also cuts down on the growth of bacteria. The regular can opener is a breading ground for bacteria if you don't clean it after every use, since the piercing mechanism goes into the food contained in the can. this type of opener does not touch the food, so it does not need washing after every use and does not promote the growth of bacteria in your kitchen.
